To think, to consider in Swiss German

12/18/2019

We Swiss like to think, to consider different option. Before we make a decision we love to discuss our ideas. To think to consider different options is just an essential part of being Swiss. I think our nation is to very spontaneous, before we do something we need to think about it. Let's have a look at the word "to consider"
Picture
Er überleit s sich, e nöii Schtell i de Schwiiz z sueche.
sich öppis überlegge
to consider/ think/ reflect on

ich überlegge mir
I consider

du überleisch dir
you think

er überleit sich
he reflects on

si überleit sich

mir überlegged üs

ir überlegged öich

si überlegged sich
they reflect on
I reflect since a long time on who we could invite for Silvester.

Er überleit s sich, e nöii Schtell i de Schwiiz z sueche.
He considers to look for a new job in Switzerland.

D Maria möcht no e Lehr als Gärtneri mache.
Maria would like to make another apprenticeship as a gardener.

After long consideration, she came to that decision.

Das isch doch e super Schance! Was überleisch so lang?
Well, this is a great chance! What do you consider so long?

I never take hasty decisions.

I always have to sleep at least one night over it.

Am nöchschte Tag gseht d Wält scho wider ganz andersch uus.
On the next day, the world looks completely different again.

And so one has time to think everything through exactly,

Jo aber mängisch verpasst mer denn au öppis.
Yes, but sometimes one then misses out on something too.

Cha-mer eigentlich jetz scho Schii fahre?
Can one really ski already now?

Jo scho, aber mer mues i di höchere Schiigebiet goh.
Yes, one can, but one has to go to the higher ski resorts.

Z Andermatt-Sedrun het s jetz es grosses Schiigebiet.
In Andermatt-Sedrun there is now a big ski resort.

It seems there are 16 ski lifts and one can ski on more than 30 ski runs.

Das sind im ganze guet 100km Piste!
These are in total more than 100km of ski slopes!

Have you been there already?

Nei, aber vilicht chö-mer dä Winter einisch goh?
No, but maybe we can go once this winter?

Jo. Denn mü-mer aber rächtziitig d Tagescharte bueche.

Christmas markets in Switzerland

12/12/2019

Tooday's lesson is about Christmas markets. I really enjoy the location of those markets. You can find there really interesting presents of gifts for Christmas.  Apart from location and the possibility to get some presents I also enjoy the atmosphere of those places.

At last: It’s Advent- and Christmas time

In many towns, there are Christmas markets.

There are so many stalls with things.

Mit dene cha-mer mängem e Fröid mache.
With these, one can “make” a joy for many.

And all these lights!

Überalll brännet-s!
They’re “burning” everywhere!

Das fröit sogar de Gritibänz.
This makes the “Gritibänz”  very happy.

Für d Chind isch natürlich de Wiehnachtszauber scho fascht perfäkt,
For the children, the Christmas magic is nearly perfect,

when they meet Santa Claus …

und er ine e Läbchueche schänkt.
he gives them a gingerbread.

Uuf de Iisbahn chönd si schlittschüehle
They can ice skate on the ice rink.

…  and turn around in circles on the merry-go-round.

Should I stay in the US or go to Switzerland?

12/9/2019

Here is a short story from my student who  has to make a very important decision: to live and work in Switzerland with his family or stay in the US.
Picture

Ich ha-n-es Dilemma.
I have a dilemma.

Ich ha verschideni Schtelle-aagebot.
I have different job offers.

Eis isch e Schtell i de Schwiiz.
One is a job in Switzerland.

Di andere sind verschideni Aagebot i de USA.
The other one is different offers in the USA.

The problem is, that we don’t know anybody in Switzerland.

Mini Schwigereltere wohned au z Amerika.
My parents in law live in America too.

They enjoy good health, but they are already 80 years old.

Mir mached üs also Sorge um iri Zuekunft.
So we worry about their future.

Mir möchted si nid eifach i-n-es Altersheim abschiebe.
We wouldn’t like to shove them off in an old people’s home.

Besides Switzerland is very expensive and as a sole wage earner with four children maybe it isn’t easy to live there.

Was dänksch du?
What do you think?

Sölle-mer i d Schwiiz go wohne?
Should we go to Switzerland?

Oder sölle-mer i de USA bliibe?
